Born in 1977; one of the leading directors in Hungary. A graduate of the acting and directing department of the Theatre and Film Arts University in Budapest, he completed the European Theatre Union’s directing course in Stuttgart. Balázs studied with such artists Anatoly Vasilyev, Jozef Nagy and Robert Wilson. In his productions he pays a lot of attention to rhythm and musicality; in his opinion the role of theatre is to give the audience “a complex theatrical experience which appeals to emotions and senses, and raises the scenery, movement and music to the same level as the spoken word”. Since 2002 Balázs has been the artistic director of the Maladype Theatre, a company which he founded. He has tackled both contemporary and classic works, and his favourite authors include Dante, Ghelderode, Wyspiański, Chekhov, Genet and Ionesco. Balázs has developed his distinctive theatrical style, working, in particular, with the Maladype group, one of the most interesting phenomena in Hungarian culture today.
During the Dialog-Wrocław Festival Zoltan Balázs will present his production of “Leonce and Lena” after Georg Büchner’s play.
