To join in the celebration of Festival Dialog–Wrocław, Kino Nowe Horyzonty invites you to a mini film showcase that complements the festival’s artistic program by offering a perspective on theatre through the lens of cinema. Across three screenings, we will explore the blurring and sharpening of reality observable in the narrow space between theatre and cinema. We will see how the roles we perform can drive us to the edge of madness, help us experience and understand grief, and even connect with the beyond. All of this is reflected in a multiplied mirror, where it becomes unclear what is truly reflecting what – reality in theatre, theatre in cinema, or perhaps cinema in reality.

Drive My Car (Doraibu mai kâ)
dir. Ryūsuke Hamaguchi
duration: 179 min
production: Japan 2021
Ryūsuke Hamaguchi’s film masterfully adapts Haruki Murakami’s short story from “Men Without Women”. The director invites viewers into the iconic red Saab 900 Turbo, capturing the mysterious feel of Murakami’s writing on screen. He also builds on the original story, exploring themes of secrets, betrayal, breaking free from life’s roles, and a man coping with loss.
Yūsuke (Hidetoshi Nishijima) is an actor and theatre director, and his wife, Oto (Reika Krishima), is a television screenwriter who enjoys telling stories even in bed – though any broadcaster would censor those. Their bond seems profound – until Oto unexpectedly dies, leaving behind many secrets. Grief-stricken, Yūsuke travels to Hiroshima to direct a stage production of Chekhov’s “Uncle Vanya”, in which the leading role goes to a young actor, Kōji (Masaki Okada). Kōji once knew Oto and holds answers to the questions tormenting her husband. But will Yūsuke find the strength to confront the man with whom his wife shared her secrets?
Pogrążony w smutku Yūsuke wyjeżdża do Hiroszimy, by tam reżyserować w teatrze czechowowskiego „Wujaszka Wanię”, w którym główną rolę dostaje młody aktor, Kōji (Masaki Okada). Kōji znał Oto i zna odpowiedzi na dręczące męża pytania. Czy jednak Yūsuke zdobędzie się na konfrontację z mężczyzną, z którym jego żona miała swoje tajemnice?
